Are Ctenanthe easy to care for?

Ctenanthe appreciates warm temperatures and bright to medium indirect light. The thin leaves are delicate, so regular watering and high humidity are required to keep this plant happy. Be sure to keep it out of direct sunlight, which will cause the leaves to scorch.

Why is it called the Never Never plant?

This family is also called 'never never plant' or 'prayer plant', since the plants in this family close up their leaves at night, as they are in prayer. Their leaves open up in the morning again.

Why is Ctenanthe never never planted?

Due to its growth pattern, Ctenanthe (just like its cousin, Calathea) is unfortunately not really a candidate for the easy method of stem propagation. It just doesn't have stems, as the leaves sprout directly from the roots.

Can I mist my Calathea with tap water?

Keep the soil moist from spring to autumn, and provide some humidity by misting the leaves daily or standing on a tray of moist pebbles. Calatheas need to be watered with filtered or distilled water, or rainwater – not tap water.

Should I mist Calathea leaves?

While some might appreciate being misted, take care not to mist them directly on the top of the leaves (or have moisture fall into the tightly raveled straws the new leaves make). Spray from the bottom up, and higher overall humidity is preferred over misting.

Can Ctenanthe grow in low light?

Your Ctenanthe will do best in medium to bright indirect light, but will tolerate lower light situations. Do not place this plant in direct sunlight as the leaves will burn. or best results, water your Ctenanthe when the top 25-50% of soil is dry.

What problems do Ctenanthe have?

The common plant diseases that may bother Ctenanthe include root rot, leaf spot, botrytis, leaf rust, and powdery mildew. Some of the problems may stem from soggy soil conditions.

How big does Ctenanthe grow?

It is grown as a houseplant and can reach 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide. Plant in a humusy well-drained soil and keep moist during the growing season. It needs high humidity and bright indirect light. It is intolerant of drafts and temperatures below 60 degrees F.

Do all plants not like being touched?

Can you water propagate Ctenanthe?

Snip the tall stem and place it in water or soil. You will see the roots developing from the nodes of the leaves if you are doing propagation in water and when the roots develop bigger, place them in soil. Whereas if you are doing propagation in soil, take the cutting and place it in soil.

Can Ctenanthe grow in shade?

While Ctenanthe can tolerate some shade, they prefer bright, indirect light. Insufficient light may cause loss of variegation in the leaves, too much on the other hand, will cause the leaves to fade.

Can Calathea survive without sunlight?

They don't do well with strong, direct light but do require a bit of sunlight each day, especially in the spring and summer. Like the spider plant, calatheas will do well with a bit of a growing light or just some moderate light from your window. The lovely pink in their leaves will fade with too little sunlight.

Is coffee grounds good for Calathea?

Although Calathea like a soil pH of around 6.5 and coffee grounds tend to be around a pH of 6.5-6.8, making it acceptable from a pH standpoint, it is not recommended to add coffee grounds directly to your Calathea soil.

Do you water Calathea from top or bottom?

BOTTOM WATERING

  • Fill the plant tray with water.
  • Make sure the soil is in contact with the water on the tray.
  • Wait for about 10 minutes.
  • Feel the soil to see if it absorbed enough water —> if the soil is moist throughout, remove any excess water from the tray.
  • If it's still dry —> add more water to the tray.

Why are Calatheas difficult?

Calatheas are known for being fussy plants. Like many indoor plants, they're native to very moist and tropical locations that are a world away from most of our home environments. Your Calathea may experience leaf drop, browning or other growing pains- especially as it becomes accustomed to a new home.

How do I know if my Calathea needs water?

Calathea prefer soil that is consistently evenly moist at all times but not soggy. If the top 2” of the soil become dry then your plant is ready to be watered. If you let the soil dry out too much, you may see browning, yellowing, or curling leaves, but don't fear.

Where should I place my Calathea?

Lighting and humidity: Calathea plants thrive in humidity, prefer indirect lighting and will grow best in a shady room. Place your plants away from any open windows with sunlight. You can provide ample humidity by placing a humidifier in the room, or by placing the potted plants on top of a saucer filled with pebbles.
